Ralph McNaughton Derek Fillhispockets as he is being called on 630 CHED has lost all political credibility. From being the former Alberta director of the Canadian tax payers federation where he regularly pilloried federal and provincial politicians for wasting tax dollars, to being the very outspoken opposition finance critic, he has probably sewered his political career. Jason Kenney will no longer want any political endorsement from this hypocrite. Like · Reply · 1 · 12 hrs

Jillian Sturm Its in essence theft from tax payers. When will politicians understand they are OUR employees. They often forget the servant part of being a public servant.

I get a kick out of how he immediately throws his ex boss under the bus 😁

Chelsea Watkins Well, there is something wrong with AirBnB-ing your publically subsidized apartment. If you don't understand this, then you're the perfect politician. I don't want you to donate your money, I want to stop renting it out your apartment.

Deryk Norton Perhaps the Journal could rediscover investigative reporting and tell us which MLAs are using their housing allowances to buy a place or pay down a mortgage.

Dan Barham While this may not be illegal because the laws still haven't caught up with AirBnB this is not OK. Per the statement by the chief of staff:

'the system is set up with the intention that members claim actual expenses, not the maximum by default.'

Since Derek is turning a profit on the property by renting it via AirBnB the property is not actually generating actual expenses.

Meanwhile his offer to pay the profits into the provincial debt is a fake PR stunt as individual citizens can not write cheques to the debt or government beyond their tax assessment.

For those of you who think this is ok, ask your self if a member of Notley's staff was doing it would you ACTUALLY feel the same way? I think not.

Clayton Bowen This kind of thing is probably more common there should be just a set amount paid to rural members for the days they need to be in Edmonton

Ross Penner I think Derek should be fined $100,000 for wrongful doings maybe use him as a good example stop using the public to pay their way and I think he should get a 1yr suspension from political activety,,

Samantha Shaw Disgusting... these people have no respect for taxpayer dollars
Julie Ali Yup. And now I am curious if this practice of investing taxpayer dollars to make a profitable business on the side is endemic among the other MLAs. Who will tell us?

How many MLAs are subletting their apartments and also getting paid the housing allowance?

Bill Adams it's amazing that when it comes to UCP corruption the members are fine with it but if anybody else did it they would going nuts, just shows how they would govern if we let them back in, this is why we kicked the Pcs to the curb

Zoë Sellers Ladies and gentlemen the #UCP in action. Fildebrandt loves his government handouts, as long as they're for him.

Julie Ali Very sad indeed. But then the political hires know how to milk the system and taxpayers are all a herd of cows to them.

Sandra Lee Really, he finds nothing wrong with this, that's full on double dipping.

Joan Paton The oroblematic ethics of taking money from the public to pay your rent and then making money by re-renting it to someone else should not need to be explained to him. This is not like using a housing stipend to pay a mortgage or pay rent where you live. Pretty shameful in my mind.

Dean Chiasson Typical of all blood-sucking right-wingers.

Dean Chiasson Larry Phillips I'm not suggesting otherwise. However, as a general rule the pig's snout in the trough is most often a right-wing one.
