Report on a Seminar Human Rights of Seniors: Community Reflections and Actions November 16, 2016 Mill Woods Seniors Association Report Authored in May 2017 by Dr. Zohra Husaini & Yavar Hameed Page 3 Ruth Adria, founder of the Elder Advocates of Alberta Society, forcefully pointed out that elder abuse and neglect are underreported crimes. She concluded that there is 'no justice, no accountability for victims of abuse.' No one speaks out of fear or shame or of family dishonour. There is no law that allows automatic charges being laid in such cases. Victims of abuse often drop charges for fear of losing family support or in order to protect the family. Ms. Adria urged elders to raise their voices. With Ms. Adria at the helm, the Elder Advocates of Alberta Society have been actively involved in protecting the interests of senior Albertans for decades. The organization champions the cause of seniors in the Courts and on the public agenda on issues including (but not only) seniors' long term care, deficient protections under the Alberta Human Rights Act, trusteeship concerns to driver's license testing for seniors.

I put up the stories
and I listen to the excuses
and I deny
the losses as I move forward
to the new world
I am creating
in my mind

I say the events of policy and procedure
that don't obey the legislation
for what is the Trespass to Premises legislation
other than an infringement of human rights?
these are residents living in their homes
and why are their families denied?
I am tired of patience    lets start the wildfires

and keep going
for change in the continuing care system
we're no longer waiting like donkeys for the loads
of lines provided by the government of Alberta
instead we're doing our best to become politically active
we're showing our lives
and we're asking for y'all to vote out the failures in government

The use of the Trespass to Premises legislation in continuing care facilities is an abuse of the human rights of the residents who are living supposedly in their "homes".
Now couple the human rights abuses with the risks presented to the most vulnerable citizens who cannot speak for themselves and you have a catastrophe that has been legislated by the GOA under the PCs and continued by the NDP folks because of convenience.
What sort of convenience? Bureaucratic and political convenience.
When families speak about the poor care of their loved ones, the system bans them and if that doesn't work well then there are lawsuits.
The PCs created the Trespass to Premises legislation that allows the banning of families and advocates.
The Tucker family presents us with the most recent (known) use of the legislation to ban advocates who are family members.
Why does the GOA allow the use of this legislation that is in my opinion in conflict with the rights and freedoms of citizens? Because they don't want the dirty history of continuing care neglect, harm and death out there for the public. Not that the public gives a damn.

PLEASE SHARE!!!! It breaks by heart to have my mom in a emergency room bed were at least dad can now visit her . A care home in grande prairie has abused my mom for the last time . We are now taking up space in an emergency room while awaiting for a doctor to help us find a spot . The care home today slammed the door in my face as I tried to talk to them. As I had to remove mom s belongings out of there so the abuse can't continue. Dad fought with them for years with documentation and pics plenty of proof to put them under . But everyone turns a blind eye to the abuse and call it un founded . The judge without any looking at foundings or proof just say your banned and any further cost comes to dad? How does a retirement man pay for lawyer fees. I want this banning my dad from the care home for a full year without visiting rights to go viral . He has legal guardianship to be her voice from a court but means nothing . How does the justice system work ? She cannot speak for herself . Please share the shit outta this . Media here I come
