Julie Ali The spin that is being written by the NDP folks is not credible. If they really want to help seniors why don't they fix the problems in the continuing care system? Publishing this sort of fantasy chatter will not be productive without deliverables. There are none in the continuing care system. When will Ms. Hoffman look at the Trespass to Premises legislation and consider the violations of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms that this legislation represents? When will the Minister do her job and ensure that there are patient rights so that we don't have doctors deciding the life and death decisions of handicapped citizens? When will we have Alberta Health providing real oversight of the vulnerable patients in the continuing care system who are stuck in supportive living placements rather in long term care where they belong? When will this happen? Well it won't happen. Because it is doubtful to me that any political party cares about seniors except to write Pablum posts like this one. Seniors have spent their lives taking care of us. Now its our turn to take care of them.
Seniors deserve dignity. That's why Alberta's NDP is investing in community health care.

Leah McRorie Right but not by institutionalizing people. Segregation leads to poor health & early death.

Julie Ali Some complex care cases will require institution care Leah. It's not all one way or the other. There has to be a compromise. You can provide quality institution care where folks have some chance of decent living rather than leave them to crappy services out of the institution. For some families, they have been told they can't get respite. The GOA is using siblings to look after disabled family members. This is unfair to parents and siblings. Government needs to provide respite and supports in the family setting; families with disabled citizens should not suffer stress, hardship and poor quality of life just because government refuses to provide appropriate accommodation in supportive living settings or in places like Michener Centre. Some folks need places like the Michener Centre.

Leah McRorie No one needs Michener 😳 No one. That's a horrible myth. Replace disability with Indigenous ppl, Black folks, is it still ok? Of course not. Institutionalizing anyone is stripping innocent pwd of their human rights. It's shameful.

Leah McRorie Any support pwd can get in Michener folks do and can get in community. Michener is a sin & I'll be there when they burn that disgusting place full of abuse & eugenics to the ground.

Julie Ali Leah McRorie If not Michener than a complex care facility to handle the most disabled citizens. Or would you prefer that doctors keep putting "Do not resuscitate" orders on folks they can't help as they did for my sister? Until she got an integrated care plan that met her needs she was suffering. What do you think happens to complex care citizens who don't have strong advocates like you? They get DNR orders.

Leah McRorie Julie there are people then & now with Disabilities far more complex than the folks in Michener living & thriving in community. Disability does not mean ppl have no human rights. Inclusion is a right not based on opinions. Not yours or mine. Humans are disabled. Not their rights.

Julie Ali Leah McRorie Having read some of the information you have provided Leah I agree that disability doesn't mean that you get stuck in an institution without human rights. However I again repeat, some citizens must be placed in complex care placements of some format. These complex care placements are required because the system as a whole fails to provide the services and supports required by the disabled citizen to live quality lives in the community. Why do I say this? Just look at my handicapped sister's case. They were all ready to put "Do not Resuscitate" (DNR) orders on her at the Grey Nuns Hospital--- rather than ensure she had a proper care plan that kept her out of hospital. We can talk until the cows come home but the reality is that the system fails our family members. My sister had her family. What about those who have no families to work for YEARS to get her the help she needed? Who is going to face retribution to ensure that their family members survive in this crappy system? I'm guessing not many.
