Emergencies can be planned for but it takes many years if you haven't got a good return for your labour. In my opinion you need to get a good return for your labour in order to become your own bank. Then emergencies will be less traumatic.

Emergencies can be planned for but it takes many years if you haven't got a good return for your labour. In my opinion you need to get a good return for your labour in order to become your own bank. Then emergencies will be less traumatic.
It is difficult to become debt free and also have an emergency fund in today's world of immediate gratification and very little deferring of wishes.
But it can be done.
Just do it.
And if you are getting paid very poorly for your labour and can attempt going back to school--do this as well. NAIT offers students in Alberta good value for the money/ time and you can get a reasonable return on your efforts.
If you want to do bigger things, start small. You can also go into a profession later in university with enough money saved up from your NAIT job. Or you could just work at your NAIT provided job and become invaluable. Invaluable folks tend to get more money for their labour and if you save most of what you earn, you can invest and become independent of the banking system. You can become your own bank.

Jennie Wing Oh well...when i was disabled from my job it took about 2 years before I got a cent from WorkSafe BC. Had to go to the WCAT to get my claim accepted but then the case manager ignores my medical reports and says I wasn't disabled though and won't get wage loss...so had to appeal through the RD and back to the WCAT again for some wage loss...then the same case manager manages to misinterpret my medical reports the WCAT pointed out to him and says well we will only give you six months. If you are disabled and have to deal with them you may lose everything and may or may not ever see a dollar from them. People should know that.

Jennie Wing Charles Edward Gee I thought the topic was 'could you survive a financial issue'? I thought it might be helpful to remind people they can't depend on WCB.

Julie Ali Jennie Wing Thank you for your story. It is indeed important to hear how the disabled in our society face many challenges and anyone could face disability at any time.

Julie Ali It is true that we need an emergency fund but some of us aren't able to do this because of poor returns from our labour. Others just don't save money. But your tips are useful.
