Why are folks worried about their family in the long term care system with reference to a nurse with mental health issues? The problems aren't limited to the nurse who murdered her patients. The problems are with the government failures to audit, penalize and ensure resident health and safety. The folks in the long term care system and other sectors of the continuing care system do not have a voice in our society. The only reason this case was discovered was because this nurse came forward and told us. But what about all the other non-compliances in the system that result in adverse events and fatality? Who tells us these events?
In Alberta the government hides this information from us. The CCHSS audits are not provided on a website. The accommodation reports only stay up for a small period of time. The Quality audits by AHS and Alberta Health are not disclosed. The practice of secrecy extends from the deaths of kids like Serenity in the child welfare system to the adverse events, harm and fatalities in the continuing care system. It's all hidden from us. And when families yap in public we get retribution--banning, evictions of our family members and lawsuits. The silencing of the lambs indicates to me at least why we have cases like this nurse and her history of murder.
Failed governance in Ontario folks. And it's right before you.
Worry about your family in the continuing care system all over Canada folks. The lack of oversight is not limited to Ontario. It's here in Alberta as well.
