Fair Vote Canada/Représentation équitable au CanadaLike Page 5 hrs · CLICK TO ENLARGE This is how the Liberals voted on the motion to concur in the report of the all-party committee on electoral reform (ERRE). The motion was defeated 159 NO to 146 YES, with all 159 NO votes being Liberal. Two Liberal MPs - Nathaniel Erskine-Smith and Sean Casey - voted yes. Had this motion passed, it would not have required the government to act on any of the recommendations of the committee. It was an opportunity for Liberal MPs to show support for electoral reform and signal that they wished to re-open the Liberal Party promise to make every vote count in 2019. We know from 14 commissions/assemblies/committees, 14 years of national polls and our recent poll of 15,800 people in 20 Liberal ridings, and the ERRE's own work that Canadians support proportional representation. To determine the best model of Proportional Representation for Canada, while respecting the need for all MPs to face the voters
and be accountable to voters,
we call on federal parties to commit to:

  1. Conducting a multi-partisan process involving citizen and expert consultation to determine the best model.
  2. Implementing the model in time to Make Every Vote Count in the 2019 election.

This broken promise will prove to be a bigger issue than the Liberals anticipated. Canadians think 39% of the vote should equal 39% of the seats. The voting system and how we allocate power is the foundation to policy decisions. Shouldn't all votes count?

May every Liberal MP who broke faith with voters and voted against electoral reform be defeated in the next election.
