and instead you have all left this work to Ruth Adria / as if she is to bear the burdens of the sheep which we have become

What happens when families refuse intimidation and retribution? What happens when we do the right thing and stand by our family members in the continuing care system? What happens when we don't get moved forwards by Patient Relations at AHS and Covenant Health? What happens when we don't accept the positions of no action by the folks at Alberta Health and by the people we elected to their positions in power? What happens when we do not stay silent? What happens when we join groups like The Elder Advocates of Alberta Society? What happens when we join up --group with group all over Canada and the world to speak for the human rights of the elderly in our society?
I'm guessing that government begins to do the work it has failed to do. I'm guessing that no oversight--no interest---no autopsies and tons of regulations changes to effective government oversight, major interest, autopsies done and tons of regulations that mean more than spin.
I'm guessing that the political action of families will change the system.

although I have told you
the stories of citizens dying
and neglected
suffering for no damn reason
other than government incompetence
and indifference
you have not spoken up
because you have no family in the continuing care system
you think these incidents are inevitable
and necessary matters

although I have told you
what happened to my handicapped sister
and to others in the system
you have not spoken up
you have looked at the carnage
and said that there should be no more cash
put into the care of the most vulnerable citizens
because they aren't part of your tribe of humans
I have told you over and over that the tribe
becomes who you love      and surely you can be excessive?

although I have told you
that each of us have the power to change the world
you have scoffed and hidden your faces behind your masks
you have told me that speaking out just gets you into trouble
(just look at the Good Samaritan Society lawsuit!) and you have silenced yourself
so that only a few of us have stood before the firing line
so that only a few of us have risked ourselves
so that only a few of us have refused to be complicit
with the government of Alberta's show of spin that means nothing
nothing at all   for without the legislation and the oversight there is no point to extra money

although I have told you
the stories of seniors who were allowed to die
and then euthanized if they weren't fast enough
although I have told you about cost benefit analysis of termination decisions
and the failures of the doctors at the Grey Nuns Hospital
you have all refused to do the work of integrity
and instead you have all left this work to Ruth Adria
as if she is to bear the burdens of the sheep which we have become
as if she was the only backbone to be discovered among the invertebrates
as if she was to do the work of the citizens and the government

Julie Ali Amusing that the GOA which is complicit in the ignoring of elder abuse is putting up money to tell us they really do care. Yeah right.

SENIORS ADVOCATE APPOINTED
The newly appointed Advocate's mandate is "to HELP seniors NAVIGATE the various publicly funded services available to them and PROVIDE EDUCATION on ISSUES AFFECTING SENIORS, “including matters such as elder abuse, age friendly communities, older workers and ageism.”
Just as previous appointees, this Seniors Advocate appointee is given NO POWER. She shares this flawed position with other agencies such as the OFFICE OF THE OMBUDSMAN, the PATIENT ADVOCATE the ALBERTA MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE, the PROTECTION FOR PERSONS IN CARE. All are just a facade, a deception.
All are costing us, the taxpayer, millions and millions of dollars but provide little or no protection and guarantee no rights to older Albertans.

Julie Ali I would like to see the GOA do its job and provide direct oversight of continuing care facilities which would mean penalties for non-compliances rather than the whitewash job through the Protection for Persons in Care office and the many advocates offices that do not provide help to the citizens in need. I know. I went to the Health Advocates for help with my sister's eviction. I was told they could not help me. This was before the Seniors Advocate came into existence. I don't believe the creation of a temporary Seniors Advocate is anything other than a placating move by the NDP folks to their voters who want change in continuing care oversight and performance. It may be this Seniors Advocate may want to do some work but without any power how exactly is she to do this? Even the Ombudsman is not able to force government to do anything. These offices are paid by us and do not serve us. In my opinion they simply serve the GOA by providing information about issues that are pissing off citizens so that spin can be created. Isn't this why we have no change in the care of seniors and why we have 795 kids dead in the child welfare system in Alberta? Spin doesn't equal deliverables in my mind; nor do placebo solutions of a Seniors Advocate.

Barry Snell Since you asked Christine, let's start with some protection for seniors in the Alberta Human Rights Act. (Sections 4 and 5 of the Act discriminate against seniors.) Next step, put Elder Advocates of Alberta into the position, and give them the legislative and regulatory power to hold abusers accountable. The improvement in the lives of vulnerable seniors would be immediate.

Beth Podgurny For more information about what's really going on - visit www.onmymothersbehalf.ca and read On My Mother's Behalf - A Daughter's Story. This book not only tells of what my family went though but also about - Health Care System is failing our seniors. It's shocking!

Johanne Ravenda Thank You! I will also post on Handicap-Vie-Dignité Facebook page. We must continue to unite our energies and our commitments towards the respect of the fundamental rights of elders who are in vulnerable situations.

Mary Levert I agree who are in vulnerable situations beyond their control that comes with retaliation knowing the fear of that one being in mental anguish

Julie Ali Mary Levert The seniors and handicapped have no voice in our society. Families and advocates are their only chance at justice. It's ridiculous that up until the age you are in a continuing care facility you are considered worthy but once there you are disposable.

Johanne Ravenda Julie Ali ...well said! That is why , we as advocates, have the moral obligation to speak out , break the silence, change attitudes, advocate for the respect of their fundamental rights, especially their right to be treated with dignity and respect ... I😔

Julie Ali Johanne Ravenda Very difficult to do. Seniors aren't sexy in terms of media and we face retribution. Ruth Adria has been banned, escorted out of facilities and sued. I am being sued. If you speak make darn sure you will be able to have a paper trail to defend yourself in court with. Better yet---tape every contact with the government, health authority and the care provider. The care provider won't give you permission but I believe that you can put cameras in the rooms of your loved ones. Don't wait for government. In Alberta, government is complicit because of its inaction.

Johanne Ravenda Julie Ali Again... your comments "sadly" reflect the reality of the experiences of families advocating for the respect of the rights of their loved ones. A system is meant to protect itself and when it feels attacked, it retaliates against the whistle blowers by "attacking the messenger, not to hear the message" : visit restraints, attacks on reputations, mises-en-demeures, legal pursuits, etc. and worst of all , retaliations against your loved ones... I have been through all of the above....Yet, not advocating would mean closing our eyes to abuse and neglect, thus allowing the abuse and neglect to continue.
That is why, Handicap-Vie-Dignité (HVD) always insist on the number one rule for advocates: NEVER ALONE. Rule number two: BACK UP every incident with notes, pictures, videos, witnesses, research, etc. This being said, abuse and neglect in long term care settings must be addressed in a systemic fashion in order to create a closely knitted security net... creating systemic safeguards. In Quebec, we have recently adopted a law specifically design to address abuse and neglect of persons in vulnerable situations... Another step forward...
But again, without advocates, we are preaching in the dessert... That is why we must stay unite every time we have the possibility to do so. That is why I am very happy that we have this network and others to reach out to each other. Thank you Susan Macaulay for creating this one...

Julie Ali Johanne Ravenda The network will get the word out to some of us who are searching for this information. But for the majority it's not a problem until it is a problem for them I agree it is the right thing to do to stand up for your vulnerable family but it is essential you get medical files, e-mail and letter trail of all communications and tape. Don't go alone as you have mentioned; better yet take an advocate with you to witness the meetings. You won't ever know what goes on behind closed doors but in our experience government will do anything to avoid media attention. We have the Protection for Persons in Care law but the office is under the boots of Alberta Health and is not productive. Families joining up like this and the exposure on the web/media is what will begin change.

PLEASE SHARE!!!! It breaks by heart to have my mom in a emergency room bed were at least dad can now visit her . A care home in grande prairie has abused my mom for the last time . We are now taking up space in an emergency room while awaiting for a doctor to help us find a spot . The care home today slammed the door in my face as I tried to talk to them. As I had to remove mom s belongings out of there so the abuse can't continue. Dad fought with them for years with documentation and pics plenty of proof to put them under . But everyone turns a blind eye to the abuse and call it un founded . The judge without any looking at foundings or proof just say your banned and any further cost comes to dad? How does a retirement man pay for lawyer fees. I want this banning my dad from the care home for a full year without visiting rights to go viral . He has legal guardianship to be her voice from a court but means nothing . How does the justice system work ? She cannot speak for herself . Please share the shit outta this . Media here I come

Tricia Schuh My family has had lots of issues with abuse of my Dad in long term care. I am not sure what happened to your mom but Long term government care for seniors in Alberta is broken. Nothing has changed they are nursing homes where people get little care, no care or very poor care. There is a lack of equipment, staff and training. We need to treat our seniors better this should be a priority. WE need leadership to make changes in policy. Husbands and wifes should not be split up. This is wrong! I wish you and your family the best and I hope you find a better place for your mom.

Julie Ali The system is broken because the government of Alberta has abdicated its responsibilities to the most vulnerable citizens. Instead of doing proper oversight, effective auditing and performance reviews we have tolerance of accommodation non-compliances for years. In the case of the non-compliances to the standards of care we don't get this information until the opposition party releases this information to us. Why don't we have access to the CCHSS audits and the Quality audits? I guess the GOA is more interested in the impact to third party business interests than in the families they are supposed to represent. Not in the public interest at all. The very fact that we have an AHS facility at Lacombe with so many non-compliances that were brought up by families that were not dealt with indicates to me that the situation is simply in chaos. http://edmonton.ctvnews.ca/documents-leaked-after-ahs... The nearly 40 page investigation report and audit was made public by the Wildrose Party earlier this week.
“We began this because an Alberta Health Services manager passed on to us a series of documents that indicate a number of standard breaches at the Lacombe hospital,” said Lacombe-Ponoka MLA Ron Orr.

The document brings to light that not all staff at the Lacombe Hospital were trained in critical areas such as CPR, palliative and end of life care, safe lifts, transfers or use of restraints. "I think the situation is serious. The official that gave us the documents said they were shocking and felt that the public needed to know,” said Orr.
Other concerns range from expired aseptic sterile supplies like catheters, to medication being left unsecured, unlabeled and unattended.
