take your words

what you will do
will you do the right thing
for your family and speak
or will you stay safely silent?

take your words
and refute the spin
of the government of Alberta
they tell us the advocates are bad
but you read the stories
and you decide

take your words
and if you believe
the families who speak about abuse
and the lack of action by the government of Alberta
will you speak despite retribution?
will you join the chorus asking for change?  or will you silence yourself?

take your words
and testify
these are the most vulnerable citizens
these are ordinary citizens speaking for those
who have no voice in our society   we want change now
we want resident rights    which include visitation rights

Julie Ali This situation of neglect, abuse and death has been present inAlberta for decades but does not receive media attention. Families have to go to social media to provide their stories. When we speak publicly we are sent cease and desist letters to silence us by the continuing care industry members. When we do not shut up we are sued. Why are we being sued when there are audits to prove non-compliances to the standards? Well most families cannot pay for a lawyer and the high costs of lawsuits and so they can't proceed with a lawsuit either for the abuse itself or to defend themselves. One of the rare citizens in Alberta who has persisted despite being sued twice is Ruth Adria of the Elder Advocates of Alberta Society. But how will Ruth do this work alone? Families must work together and with our advocates to speak on behalf of our most vulnerable family members. If we do not speak, if we do not stand up for our families the government of Alberta will always choose politically expedient measures of ending these public debates. Why? I guess it doesn't look good for the political party in power when families speak about neglect, abuse and death that happens despite the so called oversight ofAlberta Health and AHS. Where are the audits of these facilities? Why are they not made public? Why is it that the business interests of the continuing care providers trump our interests and our right to know as citizens? Who does government serve? Sure doesn't seem to be the families. Here is Ruth Adria's work; she recently won a John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights Award. http://elderadvocates.ca/category/abuseneglect/

Long-term care visitation ban ‘astonishing’: Towle

Wildrose MLA Kerry Towle says her party will continue to fight for Albertans who are banned from visiting family members in continuing care facilities.

Wildrose MLA Kerry Towle says her party will continue to fight for Albertans who are banned from visiting family members in continuing care facilities.
That includes a woman who has been banned for two years from seeing her father at a Covenant Health facility in Edmonton. Covenant Health won’t tell her why despite Alberta’s Ombudsman saying it was unfair and the privacy commissioner saying the woman deserved to know why.
Towle said there are 10 to 15 families in the province who face similar bans but are terrified of coming forward because they fear further repercussions.
“We hear this all across Alberta. We have a situation no different than this in Red Deer. That family does not want to come forward,” said the MLA for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake on Thursday.
Towle said health-care officials tried to intimidate her on many occasions when she advocated for her brother, who was in long-term care.
He was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease in 2008 at age 32 and died in 2011.
“It happens all the time.”
She believed the health-care system is so broken and staff are so demoralized that they just can’t always deal with all the situations they face on the job.
“So when things get difficult, the go-to mechanism is to ban (family).”
She said family members are being banned from continuing care and long-term care facilities whether they are publicly or privately operated.
So far, the Conservative government refuses to help them, she said.
“Quite frankly, even if there was a reason to ban any of these families, there has to be a process to either appeal that ban or work through a mediation process to find agreeable outcomes.
“How do we not have a solution in place to figure this out?”
Towle said Alberta’s new health-care advocates put in place by the Tories can’t help because it’s not part of their mandate. They can only help Albertans navigate the health-care system.
She said Albertans would be outraged if parents were being banned from seeing their hospitalized children, but because it’s happening to seniors, it doesn’t seem to matter.
“It’s astonishing to me that we would ever let this happen. It’s astonishing to me that a lady has to go two years without seeing her father. How is that good patient care? If you want quality of life, that involves your family.”

Monda Osborne This is heartbreaking. What a screwed up system we have, treating a human being like garbage...I believe in karma and I hope all the people who can help but didn't give a shit about this beautiful lady get what's coming to them...I wish there was some way to post pictures of the cruel care workers that did and will continue to abuse helpless people all over social media so this cruelty can be stopped....this shit has been going on way too long....

Julie Ali I would suggest that you go to the Wildrose party for help. The PCs were the ones to set up the Trespass to Premises legislation without an appeal process. This is what we were informed by the former PC MLA for Riverview in Edmonton. The astonishing lack of interest by the PCs about the problems of families continues to this very day where your PC MLA ignores the problem. How long will the politicians ignore the problems now that we have social media to tell other families about this horror? I'm guessing the government of Alberta better get going establishing visitation rights for residents as well as rights similar to the residential tenancies act. Why are folks in continuing care second class citizens? Because they are powerless.

The mistreatment of AB Seniors: Mckenzie Town Care Centre
The mistreatment of AB Seniors: Mckenzie Town Care Centre We suggest naming the facilities. They have failed to protect our loved ones when we have entrusted their care to a facility & it's staff! Therefore, organizations that are perpetrating these crimes against our vulnerable seniors and disabled individuals DO NOT DESERVE protection from any of us! Our civic, provincial & federal governments MUST STOP protecting these organizations - regardless of how much revenue they bring into the economy! These acts are criminal!!! We, as people with any level of caring for our fellow human beings MUST get proactive and demand better for everyone - particularly for our precious seniors and disabled members of society! We MUST demand accountability for the actions of the organization and within the organization. DO NOT wait until something horrific happens to someone close to you! It is no longer a matter of "IF" ... it is a matter of "WHEN" because if someone you know has been placed into a so-called "care" facility, something horrible will happen to them. DO SOMETHING NOW! SPEAK UP NOW! Call, write or visit your government representatives. If you suspect mistreatment, abuse or neglect has occurred with someone you know, contact Amani Oakley at phone: (905) 943-4946. She is a Markham, Ontario lawyer representing 30 families in a class action lawsuit against Revera - a large multinational nusring home/care facility where many, many seniors have been subjected to mistreatment, abuse and neglect.

Julie Ali The mistreatment of AB Seniors: Mckenzie Town Care Centre I agree completely. Silence is complicit as the federal Human rights Commissioner has told us. These are human rights abuses.
