Julie Ali I know you are happy about this Leah so I am happy for you. But based on my family's experience with the Health Advocates this is just a lot of money down the drain for a pretense of help. Maybe if this advocate is independent of the Ministry there will be some good out of this but I am still very doubtful.

Leah McRorie Imagine had we asked for an independent office at 10x the money? It would have never existed. The Advocates office will be reviewed in 2yrs. Nothing says it can't be independent after the learning curve. The reason why seniors & health advocates failed is because PC set them up as independent & then pulled all their money & resources. Not enough money ... they put the horse before the carriage & lots of ppl including you paid the price.

Julie Ali Leah the health advocates are not independent because of the legislation. They are under the boots of the Ministry of Health. So is the Protection for Persons in Care office. The Child and Youth Advocate is similarly handicapped. I doubt that the Advocates for folks with disabilities will be an independent office. The GOA doesn't like independent officers -might embarrass the GOA when things go wrong. Doubtful that any sort of review will happen with the Wildrose government that will follow the NDP government. It's nice to have this new advocate but in my opinion, it's money down the drain.

Leah McRorie Well you are certainly allowed your opinion. But personally I listen to the folks who said they needed & wanted an advocate ... pwd who have no one. Not all have family privilege.

Julie Ali I am curious if the advocate for folks with disabilities will get banned and face retribution like the family advocates are? And even if the advocate is not under the boots of AB Health will the situation be any different with another Ministry? Doubtful. But at least we all now have the illusion of some protections for the most vulnerable defenceless folks among us. The illusion. Not the reality.
