Dear Mr. Goodale, I am writing to you about the case of Matthew Hines. The final moments of this poor man's life are an indictment of the system wide failures in the treatment of mentally ill citizens in Canada. I want to know why Correction Services Canada did not tell us the truth about this case and why the family was mislead about the cause of this man's death.

#MatthewHinesDidn'tHaveToDie--This was a death for no damn reason other than system wide failures and the lack of oversight in the prison system. Why the cover up? Why the failures? Why? I guess because the mentally ill are at the bottom of the pyramid of power and deserted by all. In this case the family asked for justice. They got some information but not the most important of all. Why no charges for this unnecessary death due to brutality of guards?

Dear Mr. Goodale,

I am writing to you about the case of Matthew Hines. The final moments of this poor man's life are an indictment of the system wide failures in the treatment of mentally ill citizens in Canada.
I want to know why Correction Services Canada did not tell us the truth about this case and why the family was mislead about the cause of this man's death.

I want to know why no charges were issued with reference to the brutalization and death of this man.
I want to know why you have done nothing as the minister for this department to ensure that this family who lost their family member got the answers they needed.

I want to know why Mr. Trudeau --who supposedly is all for the mentally ill citizens has provided no concrete change to the system in Canada.

Mental health issues are everyone's problems.
This man did not have to die.
There are other citizens with mental health issues who are treated inappropriately and end up in this man's position.
Making these citizens into criminals and inappropriately jailing them is not the answer.

There needs to be mental health services provided in specialised prisons and hospitals for those with mental health issues like Matthew Hines. Why is the system not responsive? I guess because these folks have no power, no voice and no media attention until they die. What is the federal and provincial governments doing to improve the state of crisis in the mental health system? Why can't government help the mentally ill?  Just providing money alone is not the answer. We need results.

Sincerely,

Julie Ali
