Award Nominations 2017 for Ruth Adria-The Alice Modin Award -------Julie Ali Just now · So here is the ongoing list of work that Ruth Adria has done. I had to stop as I was exhausted just making this list up.

Just following Ruth Adria around in terms of her prodigious output is exhausting for this stay at home mummy. Every award application I update the list of issues she has worked on and I ask myself --What the heck? How is it even possible for this tiny woman with the small stones of her willpower, courage and determination--to bring down the giants? I guess if you have faith the giants do --eventually fall.

Giants Fall - [Lyric Video] Francesca Battistelli

Thursday May 18, 2017

I am nominating Ruth Adria of the Elder Advocates of Alberta Society for the Alice Modin

The information provided here supports my award application for Ruth Adria of the Elder Advocates of Alberta Society.

Volunteer service provided
Service Provided to
Number of Years Volunteering
Additional information
1
Information, support and advocacy to families all over Alberta with reference to elder abuse cases, human rights abuses, as well as public education with reference to our most vulnerable citizens in the continuing care system and the mental health system.
-Services provided to the following vulnerable and voiceless citizens in our society:

Seniors. Mentally ill, handicapped citizens and the families of these vulnerable groups.

- Services provided to seniors in rural areas without easy access to provincial health, mental health and seniors advocates.

-Services provided without charge and at her own expense to ongoing series of cases that are detailed in the list of links and articles detailed below.
1992 to 2017

25 years
Documentation of human rights abuses on her website has provided the citizens of Alberta with the true history of the problems in the continuing care and mental health system in Alberta.
Ruth Adria has spoken for the most marginalized citizens when it was not yet fashionable to speak for them.
For her advocacy work she has been shamed, fined, and treated like a pariah. These abuses by the system need to be acknowledged by the society. We are only now considering the rights of our most handicapped citizens which include the mentally ill, the addicted citizens and the seniors who are in the continuing care system who have no voice in our society and certainly no power.
2.
Public education presentations to advise of legislation that impacts seniors and other vulnerable groups eg. The Resolution not Retribution presentation to the public (2015)
Services provided to seniors and their families plus any interested citizen.
1992 to 2017

25 years
Retribution is pervasive in Alberta and for the most part, families are not knowledgeable about the practices of retribution that are used by the system. Highlighting this issue over decades recently lead the Health minister to issue a directive regarding banning but this is still  not an effective solution to the problems that are still ongoing as noted by the recent case in Grande Prairie where the Tucker family has experienced banning.
3.
Legal action taken to expand the human rights of all citizens in Alberta eg. The age discrimination case (2017)

1992 to 2017

25 years
Without the action taken by Ms. Adria, Alberta would continue to be the last province permitting age discrimination.

The Gall Conference: The State of Human Rights in Alberta
Concurrent Session B:
Ageism: An Uncharted Frontier in Human Rights
The physical, financial and emotional abuse of seniors, along with deepening poverty, is a prominent challenge in Alberta today. Alberta struggles with providing long-term beds and efficient care for an aging population, as well as transportation for those who lack mobility. How well are we caring for our seniors and are we affording them the respect they deserve? This panel will explore the realities of abuse and marginalization and pose serious thought to possible solutions.

Ruth Adria is meeting with Alberta Justice folks. We have Leah McRorie and Velvet Martin meeting with other ministers but in the end all this is chatter. I -personally --I'm tired of chatter. It is the half way mark for the NDP folks. There needs to be action. Here are some suggestions. 1) A remedy for the problems encountered in the financial abuse of the POA legislation that does not require seniors to go to civil court and sue their kids. 2) Amendment to the Trespass to Premises legislation to allow the INDEPENDENT appeal process so that families can contest unfair banning by any body. It's ridiculous that anyone can ban anyone and the banned person can't do anything. We need that just society business that is not in place. 3) Retribution issues need looking at. I am being sued by the Good Samaritan Society. This junk has been going on for decades. We need SLAPP legislation in place. I don't believe families should be bullied and silenced--do you? 4) Abuse cases need to be handled by an independent of government entity. This means taking PPIC folks out of the control of the Minister of Health. 5) Real powers to the health advocates and seniors advocates -we don't need placebo advocates who we are paying big bucks for --we need real advocates like Ruth Adria. 6)Health Quality Council of Alberta needs to do reviews of individual cases like that of my sister. This would prevent the legal games and we would not have the HQCA being sued. 7) The health minister needs to look at the problems of seniors and the folks stuck in limbo as Alternate Level of Care cases. What the heck is going on in Alberta that seniors, mentally ill folks and other hard to place people are stuck like rabbits in cages of hospitals, subacute settings and at the previous ALC program at Alberta Hospital for extra costs and no sort of decent quality of life? 8) All in all we need change with the seniors minister meeting with seniors groups like the Elder Advocates. Why is it that the Justice folks will meet with us and not the seniors folks? Where are they? What do we pay for? Invisibility? Change is coming for seniors. Their families will ensure change. The frail and vulnerable seniors can't make change happen. But their families can. The baby boomer population is knowledgeable, politically active and well off. We can get change to happen. Just watch us. Ruth Adria is working for seniors. What about the GOA and the NDP folks?

Elder Rights Defenders
Advisory Board Members:

RUTH MARIA ADRIA, Registered Nurse, Ret’d.  is co-founder and Executive Director of Elder Advocates of Alberta Society, an organization formed in 1992 when the term elder advocate was a new concept, and much scorned. Their motto is “Rise in the presence of the aged and honour the face of the old”. It would take endless space to articulate all the advocacy issues the Elder Advocates Of Alberta have been involved in, from nursing homes to the court house, to the offices of professional associations, to the offices and chambers of the Alberta legislative assembly.

ADVISORY BOARD Role and Responsibilities

The role of Advisory Board members is to provide members of The Coalition of ELDER RIGHTS Defenders (Elder Rights) with advice, suggestions and encouragement. Advisory board members do not have any fiduciary, legal or other responsibilities or obligations related to the views or operations of The Coalition of Elder Rights Defenders.

So here is the ongoing list of work that Ruth Adria has done. I had to stop as I was exhausted just making this list up.

I am nominating Ruth Adria of the Elder Advocates of Alberta Society for the Alice Modin
