Award Nominations 2017 for Ruth Adria---Julie Ali Just now · My application for Ruth Adria for the Alice Modin Award was time consuming. Thank you to Dr. Edward Redshaw for your detailed letter of support for the nomination. It's hard to find folks to write these letters as everyone with family in the continuing care system is burnt out and therefore Dr. Redshaw is to be commended for his ongoing activism and support of an amazing heroine who has always done the right thing while government folks and politicians have done the expedient things.

Ruth Adria has no interest in awards. She is utterly focused on people--how to help them while government sits by idle and indifferent.
My feeling is that she has given up her life in service to the most vulnerable people in Alberta. She has a big heart--so big that she will help everyone she can. It's hard for one person to do this work and I believe we should all help her. It's important. When you have a heroine in your midst with the courage that we don't have we should recognize this courage throughout Alberta. We should speak for her and for the people she is speaking for who have no voice in our society and who are utterly defenceless. Bravo Ruth!

The following is a Letter of Support for the nomination of Ms. Ruth Adria For the Minister’s Seniors Service Awards 2017.
Ms. Adria is the Founder and Chairman of the Elder Advocates of Alberta Society. This Organization is Registered Not-For-Profit. Its Objective is to advocate for the compassionate, ethical, and safe care of vulnerable Alberta seniors. Ms.Adria has been and continues to be a tireless worker in all these objectives.
Her work in providing an understanding of elder issues including discrimination, abuse and fatality is well recognized not only in Alberta but in other Canadian Provinces.
She has a most impressive resume of numerous, diverse cases in which she has been involved.
These will have been listed in her nomination papers. As you will see they include: Abuse and neglect studies. Problems in Group Homes and Continuing Care Facilities. Euthanasia issues including the assurance that there will be no premature termination of citizens against their will. Age related discrimination of seniors driving. Most recently, with Lawyer Mr. Alan Garber, she was in court to enshrine, in concert with the rest of Canada, that age should not be a prohibitive grounds for discrimination in the human rights legislation of Alberta.
Ms. Adria has been recognized as a Human Rights Champion 2016 by the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights. These awards are meant to recognize those in our community who are actively promoting, fulfilling, protecting or educating on human rights, and making our communities a place where all belong, are included and able to participate. This was a well deserved honour that recognized all her achievements in this area.
It is unfortunate that one is unable to compile a listing, with comments of gratitude, of the thousands of people who have benefited from this Seniors Advocate actions.
During her 40 years of dedication to this cause Ms Adria has been subjected to indignities that would have made a person of lesser character and fortitude throw in the towel. Ms. Adria stood strong against these “slings and arrows” so that seniors might be more protected.
The following. epitomizes, defines and truly applies to Ms. Ruth Adria. The Elder Advocate of Alberta who deserves and has earned the Minister’s Seniors Service Awards 2017.
.
To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people ….To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; ….to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, ….by ….a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 - 1882) American Essayist & Poet
