Minister’s Seniors Service Awards

Since 1998, the Minister’s Seniors Service Awards have recognized outstanding Albertans of any age who volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of seniors.
Alberta Seniors and Housing is pleased to be accepting nominations for the 2017 Minister’s Seniors Service Awards. Individuals and organizations are eligible.
This year, we are announcing the inaugural Alice Modin Award to recognize a senior who has provided long-term volunteer service to their community, promotes volunteerism, or whose volunteer efforts have had a provincial impact.
All nominees will be recognized at Community Celebrations to be held across Alberta during the summer. The Minister will select up to eight award recipients to be honoured at a special ceremony in the fall of 2017.
Guidelines for nominations:
  • There are three award categories:
    • Individual (any age including 65 years or older)
    • Organization
    • Alice Modin Award (20 years or more of volunteer service and 65 years or older)
  • Please complete the appropriate form, tear it off and provide it with the rest of your nomination package (letters, summary of volunteer activities and other materials).
  • The nominee must sign the nomination form. Without consent, the nominee cannot be considered for this award.
Print the nomination package and poster.

A mainstay in the community is officially being recognized provincially for her tireless volunteerism in Strathcona County.
The 2017 Minister’s Seniors Service Awards will include a new honour to recognize a senior who has provided long-term service to the community. That new hardware is dubbed the Alice Modin Award, and will acknowledge the contributions of a senior, 65 or older, who has provided 20 or more years of volunteer service.
Modin, a Sherwood Park resident, started a campaign to launch Senior’s Day in Strathcona County around 30 years ago, which helped pave the way for the province-wide Senior’s Week.
“As a family, we are very proud of what our mother accomplished and we appreciate that an award for long-term volunteer service to the community will bear the name ‘Alice Modin,’ ” said Nelson Modin, Alice’s son.
“She was a consummate volunteer and it was always from the heart. She used to say, ‘Well, I’m willing and I’m still able, so I will help.’ ”
The province has noted the Minister’s Seniors Service Awards as recognizing “unsung heroes” in the community.
“Seniors built this province and they deserve to retire in dignity,” said Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing.
“Volunteers who give those seniors a helping hand deserve to be recognized. I am delighted that we are acknowledging those volunteers who make life better for seniors. I urge you to take the time to nominate one of these most-deserving volunteers.”
For more information or to complete a nomination form, visit www.seniors-housing.alberta.ca; the deadline for nominations is May 19.
Alice passed away in April 2014, after lengthy service with the Sherwood Park 55-Plus Club and the Sherwood Oaks Senior Citizens’ Association. Alice, herself, was recognized through a Minister’s Seniors Service Award in 1999 and again in 2011.
She was 97 at the time of her passing.

Today was a rush. I spent most of the day finishing off the award application for Ruth Adria. I nominated Ruth for the Alice Modin award as she has slogged in the trenches for more than 25 years:
