Today was my mother-in-laws 96 Birthday. She is a resident in a Long-Term Care Facility ( I will nor provide the name because I have seen online that our esteemed Elders Advocate Ruth Adria and our dear friend Julie Ali and others have been sued and victimized for telling the truth about the deteriorating care of our helpless souls in Long-Term Care Centres). She needed to be toileted and I was informed by one of the Care Workers that this would not be possible as she required two workers to do this and there was no one else available. She was put to bed in soiled diapers. Do you think this is humane? If you think this is acceptable then you are seriously in need of counselling or relocation by the Premier. Perhaps you might like to experience going to your bed in a soiled diaper? i don't think so. Why should you when you can go to bed at night with your mind at ease thinking these human souls are dispensable. Shame on you.

This was my most recent letter to the Health Minister copied to all MLA's and other important people in the Long-Term Care System, Continuing Care system, Elders Advocate and others.
We need to do something. Every time we visit our family in the Facility we leave completely devastated. The Care workers are overworked, overwhelmed, demoralized and cannot provide the quality of care necessary. The Health Minister and AHS are responsible for this and know they can get away with it because they believe that none of you care.
Does anyone know how to go about organizing a protest to the Legislature?
To all of you receiving this. Stop shirking your responsibilities to our voiceless, vulnerable seniors, especially in Long-Term Care Centres. There are those facing lawsuits for speaking out. This situation is unacceptable. I realize that many of you live in fear of repercussions. This is sad. This does not have to be the case if we can unite and let this government know what they are doing is unacceptable. There is strength in numbers. I never receive a response from any of you (actually just 2). Let us speak out people. Does anyone know how to get a protest going to the Legislature? A change of government will not achieve anything. I have contacted all the other parties. No response from any of them. They are all a disaster. all of them just seeking power and sucking us in as idiots. One is as bad as the other. No point in voting anymore. See you on Facebook. Please share. Something has to be done.
Dear Health Minister:
You are probably aware, as are those to whom this communication is copied, that you have major problems with the responsibilities bestowed on you by the Premier. This is a sad situation because many people are suffering because of your inaction or inability to take action.
This communication is an attempt to illuminate your problems, elucidate.them and educate you.
You will probably never be provided the opportunity of perusing this correspondence. Your robotic front line staff, as are those of the Premier and others, have been well briefed in sheltering you from any disturbing influences such as myself. However, you are not alone.
Other than two of the persons that have been copied to in the past I have not received a single response. I can only attribute this to cowardice, fear of recriminations from you or your government, or infection by the virus that you all contract once you become politicians rendering you mentally challenged.
If it is any comfort you are not alone. I have not received any responses from the Premier, any of your fellow MLA's, any of the CEO's, Presidents or any of those affiliated with Health Care such as the AHS Board of Dr. Verna Yiu., The Wildrose, the Progressive Conservatives, the Liberals, etc, have all been missing in action. It would appear that you are all a dead loss.If we were all intelligent we would all just decline to vote in the next election until you all regained your sanity.
But I digress. Perhaps I am angry. I learned today that anger is not evil if it is properly directed to those deserving it. But, my main issues today are:
!) The Mental Health System remains in serious crisis. It has been over a year since since Dr. David Swann provided you with a report on this. You have done absolutely nothing. With under funding and marijuana going to be legalized how in God's name, with your incompetence, are you going to deal with the upcoming avalanche of mental health and addiction problems?
2) "In an E-Mailed statement, ( you never talk directly to the media because you are deficient in the ability to do so) Health Minister Sarah Hoffman said while the wait for procedures such as hip fracture repairs and radiation therapy are improving, and stroke treatment centres provide some of the fastest assistance in the world, more can be done". You are so right. but none of this you can take credit for. The past two years you have been totally inefficient. Of course more needs to be done but you haven't a clue. Have you ever thought about collecting all these specialists many of whom, with a God complex, hold many of our lives and the suffering we have to endure in their hands and procedural schedules, into one room and ask them what can we do to rectify this situation? Probably, of course not. This would be too simple for a politician to comprehend. Also, you aliens, as politicians become when elected, can no longer relate to human problems.
Anyway, I have tried to illuminate your problems ( these were detailed in a previous E-Mail), elucidate them for you and provide some education.
i do not believe that you really understand the damage that yourself and AHS are doing.to our Healthcare and especially to our seniors.
We can only hope that the Premier will open her eyes to your total incapability to grasp, understand and rectify the very serious devastation created by you and AHS.and replace you with someone competent in the Healthcare system.
In God we trust. Dr. Edward s. Redshaw. Ph.D.

Julie Ali It is very sad that someone is put to bed in soiled diapers. I can't imagine how I would feel if this happened to my family member. I feel this is not meeting care needs. I am very sad for your family Edward but as Ruth's lawsuits and my lawsuit indicates there will be retribution for speaking publicly about these issues. You should be documenting by e-mail every care issue to the provider. If this does not result in changes, you can go to the folks at AHS who cannot do anything. Finally you can do the PPIC case which usually is not done until something tragic occurs. The system is set up to ensure that the public will not get the information it needs to hold government accountable for lack of funding and lack of trained workers. It is only going to get worse. Families will have to be the advocates every step of the way. Be aware this is not easy.

Public discourse on the issues faced by residents and families in the continuing care system is required. Some of the major issues are lack of funding and lack of trained staff. The government of Alberta does not mandate required staff:resident ratios as this is up to every business in the continuing care system. Without such mandated staff:resident requirements and with the lack of appropriate funding dedicated to residents we have situations of non-compliance and poor care.
It's not going to change. Government since the PC error has set up the system to fail. It has provided poor funds, no interest, no oversight but a ton of regulations for us to believe in but without oversight what is the point of regulations?
The continuing care industry is exempt from the requirements of businesses in the free market because it has a constant and endless pool of customers. The flow of customers to these businesses is a tap that government had ensured will always be on because residents have no rights to decide where they will go and are forced to go to the placement set by the health authorities. The placements are artificially in demand because government has not built public long term care facilities but has instead subsidized the private sector with public funds.
There is nothing wrong with private facilities but this also means we have no control over the important issues of care and staffing. We also have no assets and we are spending our public dollars to prop up the private businesses from start to finish. We pay for the building of their properties (real estate investments), we pay for renovations and we pay for any AHS staff at the sites. It's a sweet deal.
What do families get in return? We have no resident rights. Residents can be evicted without due process. There is no appeal process to get them back into private businesses because the AHS appeal process can't force the private business to take back the resident. The advocates can't force the private provider to take back the evicted resident. No one can do anything about evictions, bannings and lawsuits because these are private businesses. Government is complicit in this set up because government decides how public money will be spent and if it directs money to private business without providing residential tenancies type protections or really any resident rights--well then it is leaving it up to the unfree market of the continuing care businesses to decide on the rules of this game.
What are the rules of this game? The partners in care work together to ensure that everyone is doing fine except the citizens. The care of citizens is not appropriate in some cases. But we are expected to suck it up because it costs more money to provide appropriate care. When we protest, we are told that we are adversarial. This can go on until they decide it is too much trouble to discourse at all and ban you.
Families find all of this stunning and think that government will end this junk. This is amusing. Government set up this junk. Government supports this junk. And government will not end this junk.
Only families will end this junk. How? By telling their stories. Publicly.
