and I started with a few questions
and sought the answers to them

I poked about in the corners
and read up on the legislation

and I wrote to the government of Alberta
(most of the time they ignored me

but occasionally I got the information
I was seeking)

the story is built up year after year
until one day the work is done

this is to say
information is hidden

and we must seek
what we pay for

the government won't show us the trail of tears
or the cases of abuse   until we fire them

and begin again
the work of government cannot be explained

by the auditor general who isn't asking
the questions we are

such as what the heck is done with the money?
why do we have such poor oversight?

and who helps us when residents are harmed?
surely it isn't the government?  surely we can see

that the elephant isn't going to yield to the ants
until the ants unite and defoliate the forest of spin

then what will the elephant do then?
just watch as we decimate this forest

we're simple citizen ants
but once we unite

the government forest of spin won't endure
as the leaf cutter ants of citizens get to work

Without predators, leaf-cutter ants can decimate a forest.
