Samantha was so much more than a statistic (as are all children whose lives are prematurely robbed due to the actions/negligence of others.)
Samantha was a beauty with the most stunning piercing eyes that people could not help but comment upon in awe. She was a quirky, fun-loving and mischievous soul who danced like the character "Elaine" from the "Seinfeld" sitcom. She hugged fiercely and offered squeezes to most anyone adoringly. She was feisty; could stomp away in a girly huff when upset. She comprehended the importance of apology and would sign, "sorry" when in the wrong. (A trait of honour that appears to escape others lauded as scholarly authorities.) She was a character; who found great joy in playfully teasing her brothers, running off giggly when caught. She was smart and intuitive; could understand so much more than verbally express. She held fast to those she loved who loved her genuinely. She was a resilient warrior who endured physical assaults that no body should ever be exposed to and yet never wavered in maintaining the human spirit to love. Samantha was all that and more.
And yet, Samantha was referred to as an, "IT" by a lawyer with Alberta Justice. That darling soul has never received formal apology from the Government who failed her. So, as her mother, I will continue to ensure Samantha's life is not simply defined by death. She will outlive most everyone who ignore her and be remembered being a precious, valuable gift to our world.
