---no oversight--no interest--no autopsies and tons of regulations------------Edward Redshaw 8 hrs · This is what our problem is and the Health Minister will not do anything about it because she is out of touch with the reality of the situation.--------Julie Ali I doubt that the health minister is out of touch with reality. But the only reality she is in touch with is her own political reality and prospects. I have noted Ms. Hoffman's progress up the ranks of politics and I see a canny adept worker of media and the public. From the public persona you would expect a caring and interested public representative but the facts speak for themselves. First of all was the poor man who was the father of one of her constituents that she did not do anything for. You can look at Alexander Khoroshun's Facebook page to see him begging for his life. Alberta did not fund his trail with a drug that is funded by other provinces (Avastin). https://www.facebook.com/alexander.khoroshun Then there was the sad business with the hospital at Sundre where the NDP folks showed us their true colours (politically and bureaucratically expedient folks who don't care beans for families) and tried to shut down the long term care beds in this community. It was only the unremitting efforts of the folks at Friends of Medicare, the MLA for the area (Jason Nixon) and the community with media attention that resulted in a stay of action of sorts. You can read about the analysis here : http://www.friendsofmedicare.org/wodak_sundre While the Friends of Medicare did their public advocacy work effectively the NDP affiliate of the Public Interest Alberta surprisingly did not slam the NDP for their conversion to the PCs. The minister was praised for listening to the people but one wonders why she was praised when she was responsible for the decision to shut down long term care in this community. The hospital beds could not have been repurposed without ministerial approval. Then we had the promise to provide public long term care beds which are gone in to the four winds and we have a continuation of the long standing mission of the PC government to privatize care in P3 format so that we not only pay more but have less accountability and transparency for care of our family members. The minister recently approved of the P3 funding for the Villa Marguerite place as noted here: http://www.friendsofmedicare.org/ppsl The ongoing process of devolving care of our most vulnerable citizens in continuing care is accompanied by failures to provide families with audits/ quality assurance reports or really any accountability other than generic Health Quality Council reports that do not in my opinion serve any purpose other than weak reporting. While it is better than no information at all what is required is robust oversight, open access to all audits and clear reporting on follow up work by government of non-compliances, abuse and fatalities. It is not appropriate for the health minister to continue the time honoured tradition of the previous PC error health ministers and solemnly intone to the families that "abuse will not be tolerated" because our family is here to say that abuse is tolerated, neglect is tolerated, failures are tolerated and guess what? Anything government wants to tolerate is tolerated. This health minister like the others before her does the politically and bureaucratically expedient thing and that is fine. We will simply fire her at the end of her tenure like we did the Tories.---------
