Countless occasions where their meal plans weren't followed. If not for my sister & / or me showing up at meal times & insisting on changing their meals ( as per doctor's orders!) both of our parents would have starved. Lazy staff that aren't held accountable by management in both facilities! Independent & transparent audits per quarter should be mandatory for all residences in AB. ( including private care) & results published for the public to read! I have found from my experience in directly dealing with management & staff in both Govt. funded & private care, that it's the "bottom line" that is the focus & not the safety, competent care & happiness of the residents. Health Minister responsible for Seniors, Sarah Hoffman is incompetent, in my opinion. Hoffman has taken the path of least resistance ( twice) in referring my sister to contact "Patient Relations" who have no authority to dismantle the existing system & rebuilding it, with input from experts like yourself. Shame on Hoffman!!! Hoffman doesn't want to be aware of the TRUTH in what's an on-going quagmire of deflection, denial & no accountability in our health "care" system! Government has abdicated its responsibilities and as such we are forced to negotiate with private businesses that are of course interested in profits over customer service. It is especially problematic with long term care where we have folks who cannot speak for themselves but now that long term care patients like my sister are being downgraded to cheaper SL4 placements, this junk will occur in all areas of continuing care because this is a captured customer base. We have no choice in where the customer ends up, the industry has an endless supply of customers such that when their residents complain nurses tell them why don't they just go somewhere else when there is no where else to go. It's a farce. And don't think that government hasn't designed this farce. It doesn't care beans about the most vulnerable citizens, it has downloaded care to indifferent businesses with lower trained staff that have to work with complex cases without any sort of help from integrated care teams as well as manage with multiple care problems and families without end. It's ridiculous. A car manufacturing factory is managed with more oversight, interest and follow up for mishaps than the continuing care industry where everyone is partners with each other except with the customers who are seen as the nuisance they are. We have been asleep and yet I can't say we to blame as we did not know. You can't know until you actually get in contact with government and see that it is all about political and bureaucratic expediency throughout. There are good people but they are stuck with managers that are like the Borg. The major part of the public don't know, don't care and don't want to know. Only a few of us persist for years like Ruth Adria who gets tickets, gets handcuffed and pushed around by the big bullies in charge of this system. It's time we all spoke out and got this system changed. http://elderadvocates.ca/ Elder Advocates of Alberta Society Elder Advocates of Alberta Society Website.
