We're seeking proposals to build Alberta's first large-scale solar farm to help power government buildings and further diversify our electricity sector.
Government buildings have been powered 100% by renewable energy, including wind power, since 2009. Sunny Alberta has some of the best solar resources in Canada. We're taking advantage of this abundant resource by providing opportunities for the emerging solar industry and creating Alberta's first utility-scale solar jobs.

Carol Halitsky haven't you watched the news from Ont and other countries and start to realize that this is a waste of our taxpayers' money / STOP already
Dale Larsson Carol, it's primarily wind farms that are the wasteful renewable energy source.

Solar is great.

Geothermal along the Rockies in AB, BC, and Yukon Territory could power western Canada alongside the already installed hydroelectric dams.. completely, emissions free.

HOWEVER, I have a feeling that the powers that be receive some additional wallet padding for wind farms, so they keep building the junk at a loss to society.
Christian Lemieux Know what your talking about first

Anita Hellquist My cousin's dairy farm in South Germany sends energy back into the grid, by the utilization of solar panels and composting, and are paid for the energy they produce.
Spencer Pollack Why doesn't the ndp stop wasting our money with these bull shut experiments. Piss off and leave the country
Christian Lemieux Your dumb

Spencer Pollack Oh we have another loser that voted ndp with a social license
Corey Hassan Leave it to a scaffolder to make a spelling mistake and try to fix it, only to be dumb enough not notice his grammar error. It's you're dumb not your Christian Lemieux. Seriously, if you're going to insult someone be able to comprehend basic English. Or better yet, try debating like a normal person.
Spencer Pollack Corey Hassan that not the Eco terrorist cool aid drinking way though.

Terry Fishman What happens to these solar panels when it hails?
Dale Larsson If you live in an area that has hail often, I'd suggest you spend a couple extra bucks and armour them up.

You can protect them from damage, with only a slight impairment of generating capacity.

Patricia Bekkatla Awesome 😊
Steve Breum I'm all for green energy, but I did a proposal to build a solar generating farm and it isn't feasible. It would have taken over 40 years to pay for the infrastructure at current rates, and the panels have a useful life of only 25 years!
Dale Larsson Where did you get the "only 25 years" from Steve?

NASA has solar cells that have been running for 50-ish years. And they've only degraded, capacity wise, by about 20%...

So if you installed 100W panels (of what they had back then), it would still be capable of ±80W today.

I can't see new generation solar cells being worse than the first ones back then for longevity..
Steve Breum The currently produced cells have the same 20% loss.
I crunched numbers wanting to do the project, but without subsidy moneys it can't pay for itself.
Robert Yaro the carbon tax will provide the subsidy
Robert Yaro solar cells could be added to all buildings constructed by govt. Lots of new schools will to be built, lots of empty space on the roof. Considering there are 6 plans for districts to build from the cells an be engineered into the building
Steve Breum We the tax payers make up the subsidy. And I'm sick of high taxes!

Valerie Funk Ontario is broke because of this bondoogle .... they have now ceased any and all new projects !!! STOP FOLLOWING A FAILED CONCEPT !!!!

Gene Anderson Well we gotta do something to capture more energy that isn't carbon based. Got any other suggestions?
Max Reilly Gene Anderson yes I Agree we need to reduce emissions from economically viable power not replace it. Check out Germany's switch back to coal plants. And yes the technology is available all ready. The problem is the anti carbon sector doesn't seem to value reduction to near zero a viable option, because it doesn't support their's and the NDP anti Alberta oil use stance.
Valerie Funk Yes I do Gene Anderson convert our coal to clean technology .. you don't shut down 19 existing plants LIKE ONTARIO DID !!!! YOU CONVERT THEM !! THAT'S HOW MANY TOWNS ... HOW MANY HOMES HOW MANY MEDICAL OFFICES AND SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES THAT WILL ALL BE DESTROYED !!!! THAT'S STUPID !!! THEN I HAVE ANOTHER SUGGESTION .... IF CLTHE LOBBYISTS REALLY CARED ABOUT THIS EARTH AND OUR EMISSIONS ... YOU TURN AROUND AND CHARGE A TAX ON ANYTHING PRODUCED IN CHINA AND THE USA !!! WHO ARE THE WORLD'S HEAVY EMITTERS !!! UNTIL THEY CHANGE THEIR TECHNOLOGY .. AND THEN WHEN ALL COUNTRIES REDUCE AT SAME RATE THEN YOU CAN START CHARGING A FEE I'M YOUR COUNTRY !! IT'S STUPID TO SELL COAL IF WE DON'T USE IT TO SAVE THE ... PLANET BUT YET ANOTHER COUNTRY IS GOING TO USE IT ... PRETTY SURE WE USE THE SAME FRUCKEN ATMOSPHERE !!!! THAT'S PROOF THAT THIS FOR MONEY AND NOT FOR QUOTE CLIMATE CHANGE !! NDP ARE IDIOTS !!!!

Mark Barker We are Albertians we have built this great Province now we need to update the way we do things. Other people can make this transition and make it feasible why can't we?
Brett Forsyth Why farms? Why not retrofit existing buildings with solar? Give some kind of incentive for home owners to do it themselves instead of forcing a mixed opinion population to pay for it.
YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) Hi Brett, we're currently gathering feedback on energy efficiency programs for communities and households. These programs are expected to launch in January.http://www.alberta.ca/energy-efficiency.aspx

Pauline Toner Sookes If this has to be done, then allow the people to get incentives to put solar panels on their homes. Why do we need farms, another way to screw us out of more money
Wendy Rudiger I'm sure there will be incentives for homeowners to install solar panels as well at some point so we will receive some carbon tax $ back at some point. Priorities and baby steps...
YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) Yes, we're currently asking Albertans for feedback on energy efficiency programs. These programs are expected to launch in January: http://www.alberta.ca/energy-efficiency.aspx

Leanne Coombs We are on the right track!
Terry Fishman Who will remove the snow from the solar panels?
Lindsay Klein Sure, take more sustainable farmland from the province.
Paddy Whidden They don't work
Lorna Sarah Luddites is it not past your bed time?
Johnny Geetar I don't support this in any way. Oil and gas are the solutions not the problem. Vote Wild Rose to put your hard earned money back in your pockets where it belongs.
Aaron Kozel Are you teaching the youth about Nikola Tesla and his great work within the past 100 years? We don't need solar panels, we need an honest group of human beings who want to advance society rather than keep the system going and advance their careers and pockets. This is nothing more than social engineering aka mind control and about advancing the UN Agenda 21.
Barry Rainey Apparentley no one is paying attention to the problems of solar panel desintegration and the problems and costs related to the clean up of the toxic rare earth minerals. The problem having to be dealt with now by the US state governments because the solar panel companies are declaring bankruptcy as their panels fall apart..
UnlikeReply222 hrs
Barry Rainey Wind turbines in the US are rusting out and falling apart. And then they stop. Those companies are declaring bankruptcy and leaving the dismantling and clean up to the state governments. And what is our government looking at --------------- ???

Wendy McKee Germany is also pulling theirs. But, stupids in Canada want to build them. Grrrrrrr!

Janet E Smith our existing old systems also wear out and need replacement. But you are reminding us that this needs to be considered as a part of the longterm costs.
