Humane treatment for all Canadians by Sarah Swanson · 17,562 supporters-----Wendy Barron · Freelance Editor at Self-Employed I find David Orazietti's choice of words here VERY telling. The Ontario Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services may have yielded to some public pressure with regard to their treatment of Adam Capay, but they have not progressed so far to treat him as a person. To call him "the individual" and "the inmate" rather than "Mr. Capay", to refer to him as "they" rather "he" constitutes multiple levels of dehumanization. I am all for using the singular "they" when the gender of a person is unknown or irrelevant, or they have expressed a preference about the pronouns used to refer to them. But that seems not to be the case here. Words have meaning, Mr. Orazietti. Words have meaning and they have power. And you are using your words to paint a person as less than human—so much less than human that the question of gender is treated as irrelevant. You may have moved him to a different cage, but you are still treating Adam Capay like a laboratory animal. You may recognize this kind of rhetoric—and the cruelty, torture, and appalling experimentation it was used in justify—from history class. The Nazis painted the Jews as subhuman, as not human, for the same reason. Shame, shame, shame on you. Unlike · Reply · 26 · 26 October 2016 17:32 · Edited

The dinosaurs in Ontario aren't doing much in terms of responding to the public outrage over the inhumane treatment of an aboriginal man in custody. It's amazing to me that government acts in barbaric ways simply because it can and because we don't know. The shameful behaviour of the Ontario government is an indication that more of us need to write to the minister and get action ASAP.
What the heck is wrong with politicians? Can't they see just how wrong such poor treatment of human beings is? Or is it all politically and bureaucratically expedient decisions all the way?

Get going folks--e-mail the minister responsible for this mess:

A Temporary Move

OCT 26, 2016 — Hello everyone,

It has been less than a week, and our petition has already gotten over 5000 supporters.

The Globe and Mail has recently reported that Adam Capay has been moved from his cell.  Ontario’s Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services David Orazietti was quoted as saying:

“This individual has been moved from their cell,” he said. “They are no longer in that same cell. They are in a different location, with appropriate lighting and access to day rooms, spending time out of their cell for showers, phone calls and access to TV. It is my understanding, from speaking to officials, that the inmate is satisfied with the conditions they are presently in.”

Read the article here:

However, this article from TBNewsWatch suggests that this move may be temporary, and that Adam could be even more isolated when he is moved back into a new segregation unit:

Stay tuned for updates.  In the meantime, please feel free to share your thoughts about these developments.
