A teacher’s assistant at a Fort McMurray elementary school who committed sex crimes against young boys and had a huge child pornography collection has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Russell Hancock, who is originally from Newfoundland, pleaded guilty earlier this week to sexual interference, two counts of invitation to sexual touching, three counts of making child pornography, one count of distributing child pornography and six counts of possessing child pornography.

During an emotional sentencing, the 37-year-old tearfully apologized to his victims and their families after some family members angrily called him a “predator” and accused him of the “ultimate act of betrayal” while reading out their victim impact statements.

One victim’s mother told court the “horrible” event left her feeling “alone, hopeless and afraid” and suffering from anxiety and panic.

“The moment I found out my son was sexually abused by a man we called his teacher, his mentor, but worst of all, our friend, was the day my life was shattered,” she said. “I was left to attempt to pick up the broken pieces of what was left of my life.”

According to an agreed statement of facts, the RCMP began investigating Hancock in early 2014 after getting information about him from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security following the arrest of a man there on child pornography charges.

On April 17, 2014, members of the Northern Alberta Integrated Child Exploitation (I.C.E.) Unit arrested Hancock after raiding his Fort McMurray home and seizing 13 electronic devices.

Court heard Hancock admitted to police that he sexually abused an 11-year-old Fort McMurray boy and allowed that boy and another 10-year-old boy to use his computer to go on an Internet chat service and engage in sexual activity in front of a web cam.

Hancock also admitted to police that in 2008 he had sexually assaulted two 12-year-old boys and a 15-year-old boy in Newfoundland.

In a police interview, Hancock told investigators he is attracted to young boys and obsessed with child pornography and said he shares his child porn collection online with other like-minded individuals.

He also said he wishes he could “just kill the whole sexual thing completely because outside of that he still loves kids and working at a school and helping them.”

Court heard Hancock had nearly 95,000 child porn images and 5,000 child porn videos on his electronic devices

A psychological report details that Hancock admits being addicted to child porn and still fantasizes about having sex with boys and says he meets the criteria to be diagnosed as a pedophile.

Crown prosecutor Diane Hollinshead told court it is aggravating that there were multiple sex acts and “extensive” grooming and “significant” planning involved. She also noted Hancock had a “huge” child porn collection and his crimes were a breach of trust.

Court heard Hancock was employed by the Fort McMurray Public School District and taught classes at several elementary schools.
